Khartoum, Sudan – Italy continues to stand as a pillar of hope and resilience in Sudan’s health sector, leading the way with an unparalleled commitment of €92.3 million across 28 initiatives, making it the top donor in the region. In the face of a collapsing healthcare system, exacerbated by conflict, displacement, and epidemics, Italy’s strategic interventions are saving lives and fostering long-term resilience. Italy has been a key ally to Sudan for over a decade, consistently supporting the health sector through innovative programs and strategic partnerships.
During his recent visit to the Maternity Hospital – OPD – NICU in Port Sudan, H.E. Michele Tommasi highlighted Italy’s unwavering dedication to improving maternal and child health services, underscoring the significance of the facility known locally as the “Italian Hospital.” This recognition reflects decades of robust partnerships, targeted interventions, and community-focused initiatives aimed at uplifting the most vulnerable populations in Eastern Sudan.
“Italy remains committed to strengthening Sudan’s healthcare system, particularly in maternal and child health, malnutrition, and emergency response. Our integrated approach ensures that lifesaving care reaches those most in need, laying the foundation for sustainable development. We are working as a Team, our partnership will continue, to identify new projects” said H.E. Tommasi during his address to distinguished guests and partners.
Michele Morana, Head of Addis Abeba office responsible for Sudan, highlighted that amidst challenging landscape, Italy has responded decisively through the intervention of Italian NGO AISPO, by equipping hospitals and primary healthcare centers, notably the construction of a state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Port Sudan, community awareness campaigns focusing on maternal health, reproductive health, and nutrition, providing essential therapeutic food and micronutrients to combat severe malnutrition, especially among children and strengthening healthcare infrastructure and governance, ensuring long-term sustainability through capacity building and local health personnel training. With a particular focus on maternal and child health, malnutrition, and life-saving interventions, Italy is not only addressing immediate humanitarian needs but also building a resilient healthcare system for future generations in Sudan, concluded Morana.
With over 62% of ongoing projects dedicated to healthcare, Italy continues to play a pivotal role in enhancing health infrastructure, improving access to essential services, and fostering inclusive, sustainable development.
