Biography

Starting from January 1st 2025, Michele Morana is the Head of the AICS Addis Ababa Office responsible for Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, South Sudan and Djibouti.

Michele Morana is an expert in the field of international cooperation and development. After earning a degree in Architecture and one in International Cooperation, he obtained a PhD in Evaluation for Development. Since 2002, he has been collaborating with the Italian Cooperation system, holding roles of increasing responsibility.

From 2016 to July 2021, he was Head of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) office in Amman, Jordan. During this period, he launched significant new initiatives aimed at giving new impetus to cooperation between the two countries, including the signing of a new Framework Agreement for Development Cooperation in 2019. The scope of the initiatives promoted by the Head of the office was aimed at supporting medium and long-term development programs, as well as providing emergency responses to the Syrian crisis.

Subsequently, Morana took over the management of the AICS office in Khartoum, with responsibility for Sudan, Eritrea, Cameroon, Chad and the Central African Republic. In this role, he emphasized the importance of the health sector, dedicating approximately 50% of the budget to health interventions, with particular attention to mental health.

Starting from January 1, 2025, Michele Morana is appointed Head of the AICS office in Addis Ababa, responsible for Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Sudan and South Sudan.

Morana’s career is characterized by a strong commitment to strengthening the Italian Cooperation’s response capacity to the needs of different countries, expanding staff and operational spaces, improving the contribution to development through targeted, effective and constructive interventions. As Head, he promoted the diversification of cooperation interventions, including cultural heritage, sustainable tourism, mental health and the needs of people with disabilities.
